Sherif Fathy, Egypt's Minister of Tourism
and Antiquities, presented the latest advancements in Egypt’s tourism sector
and upcoming projects at EMITT 2025, taking place from February 5th to
7th.
“Egypt's tourism sector is poised to continue its
robust growth in 2025,” Fathy stated”. “15.75 million international tourists
visited Egypt last year, six percent more than in 2023. These numbers reflect
Egypt’s sustained appeal to global travellers and reinforce its status as a
leading tourism destination.”
Egypt is the new favorite of Turkish
tourists
Underlining that Turkey is a key market for Egypt's
tourism sector, Egyptian Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Sherif Fathy
pointed out that 230,000 Turkish tourists visited the country last year and
this figure means a 70% growth compared to 2023. Direct flights are available from major
Turkish cities like Istanbul to Cairo, Sharm El Sheikh, and other popular
destinations. "We expect the number of Turkish tourists to increase by 30%
in 2025."
“We are confident that in 2025, we will exceed both
the number of international visitors and the influx of Turkish travellers to
Egypt,” the minister said. “This is in line with our strategic vision, to welcome
30 million tourists by 2030.”
History, culture and wellness, tourist
attractions
Egypt is firmly established as one of the world's most
popular tourist destinations given its rich history, culture and natural
environment. The legacy of the Pharaohs with the possibility to experience the
only one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World still standing is some of
the attractions the country offers to visitors seeking to explore ancient
history and culture. Combined with diving in crystal-clear waters of the Red
Sea in addition to quality hotel offers at affordable prices and good
international air connectivity, make Egypt a top destination for families as
well as wellness travellers.
The opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum, which is the
largest museum in the world dedicated to a single civilisation, has not only
been a milestone in the country's history but also reinforces its tourist
appeal. After three decades of preparations and restoration, the gallery opened
its doors on October 16th last year. While some sections remain under
development, visitors can currently explore the Grand Hall, staircases,
gardens, and selected exhibition rooms. During the pre-opening in 2024, more
than 300,000 people visited the main rooms of the gallery.
Egypt has become a first-class destination also for
health and wellness tourism. From the luxury resorts of the Red Sea to the
remote desert oases, the country offers world-class wellness experiences. Known
for its mineral-rich thermal waters and springs, Egypt’s wellness offerings
provide therapeutic benefits for a variety of conditions, including
dermatological issues, respiratory ailments, and rheumatism. Notable wellness
destinations include the Siwa Oasis, home to more than 200 springs; Bahariya and
Kharga oases, which feature sulfur-rich waters; and Aswan, which is home to
renowned spa complexes such as Kato Doo Wellness and The Zen Wellness.
Sustainable tourism development
Egypt is committed to the sustainable development of
its tourism infrastructure and heritage, both environmentally and economically.
The conversation of the Red Sea and its biodiversity have become centre stage
in Egypt’s strategy to promote responsible tourism. Environmental certification
programs for resorts are part of this strategy, with a focus on sustainable
practices in the region from El Gouna to Marsa Alam along the Red Sea coast
