Jet2.com achieves fuel and emissions savings through lightweight paint

In the latest example of the company taking tangible actions as part of its ambitious sustainability strategy, leading leisure airline Jet2.com is applying lightweight paint to its aircraft, resulting in significant weight savings and reduced fuel burn across its fleet.

Jet2.com has applied the lightweight paint to over 80 of its aircraft, which accounts for an annual fuel saving of almost quarter of a million litres, equating to a reduction of over 500 tonnes of carbon emissions.

Aircraft paint specialists, Airbourne Colours, are carrying out the work on Jet2.com’s existing fleet, and all of the company’s brand-new Airbus A321 neo aircraft are being delivered with the paint already applied. The company’s entire fleet will be using it by 2030.

Manufactured by AkzoNobel, the paint is delivering fuel savings thanks to a weight saving of more than 20kg per aircraft.

David Neill, Corporate Affairs and Sustainability Director at Jet2 said: “Applying lightweight paint across our entire fleet enables us to reduce fuel burn and lower emissions, and it is the latest example of us taking tangible actions as part of our ambitious sustainability strategy. Alongside the many other actions that we are taking right across our operations, the use of pioneering lightweight paint demonstrates how committed we are to looking at every single aspect of our business to realise where we can make a difference."
