A state of emergency has been declared
following the ongoing earthquakes on the Greek tourist island of Santorini.
Measures have been increased due to the seismic
activity that continues to shake the Greek islands. In a statement made by the
Greek Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, it was announced that a
state of emergency (state of emergency) was declared on Santorini Island until
March 1, as the ongoing tremors in the region increased the risk of landslides
and rockfalls. Government Spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis stated that a large
number of emergency teams have been mobilized to support the island. “Fire
departments, police, coast guard, armed forces and emergency medical services
immediately reinforced Santorini and the surrounding islands with additional
personnel and specialized equipment,” Marinakis said.
On Wednesday night alone, 6 earthquakes above magnitude 4 were recorded in the waters around Santorini, followed by another stronger tremor of magnitude 5.1 south of Amorgos.
11 thousand people have left the island
After hundreds of earthquakes since Saturday, at least
11,000 people have left the island of Santorini, 7,000 by ferry and 4,000 by
plane. In addition to Santorini, schools on the neighboring islands of Anafi,
Paros, Naxos and Mykonos will be closed until tomorrow.
