2,000-year-old ancient Greek statue found in garbage bag

A marble statue of a woman, estimated to be about 2,000 years old, was found in a garbage bag near the Greek city of Thessaloniki.

A resident of the Neoi Epivates area of Thessaloniki reportedly found the 80-centimeter-long headless statue and handed it over to authorities. Police said the statue belongs to the Hellenistic period between 320-30 BC, when art and culture flourished after the conquests of Alexander the Great, according to a preliminary examination by experts. The statue was handed over to archaeologists for analysis and will be kept by the local antiquities authority for further study.

Police announced that an investigation has been launched to determine who threw the statue in the trash.
