The Algarve, famous for its incredible
scenery, delicious wine, and warm weather, has a major challenge: running out
of water. This is not a problem for the future, but one for now.
From Euronews, farmers face an uphill battle to ensure
their crops and livestock survive. However, the combined strain of reduced
rainfall and overconsumption of water by the high number of tourists makes this
difficult.
Local farmers and residents already have to grapple
with water restrictions, causing the former to rely on new technologies.
Underground irrigation systems, soil humidity monitors and regenerative
agriculture are just some of the methods used to reduce water use and increase
water retention.
