In
the Terezvaros district of Budapest, the capital of Hungary, a referendum was
held to ban daily rental apartments.
In the Terezvaros district, also known as “Region VI”,
located in the Pest region on the eastern side of the city in Budapest, the
capital of Hungary, local authorities initiated a referendum on the prohibition
of short-term rental of housing from 2026. The referendum, which started on
September 2 and lasted until the evening of September 15, has been announced.
Fifty-four percent of the residents of the Terezvaros neighborhood voted in
favor of the ban on daily rental apartments. While 3,265 of the 6,83 citizens
who participated in the referendum held between September 2-15 supported the
ban, 2,818 people, constituting about 46 percent, opposed the ban. The
participation rate in the referendum remained at 9 percent.
Tamas Soproni, Mayor of
Terezvaros, said: “The next step will be a decision by the representative body
to implement the will of the residents of Terezvaros. I think it is important
that this decision will only come into force on January 1, 2026, so that
businesses can prepare themselves for the change. The residents of our
neighborhood have set an example of how to use democratic tools and have
decided what kind of neighborhood they want to live in.”
