During
a visit to a glacier cave in Iceland, a glacier collapse resulted in the death
of one tourist, while another was injured. It has been reported that two
tourists are missing, and search operations are ongoing.
The tragedy occurred yesterday in southern Iceland
when a group of 25 tourists, accompanied by a guide, visited a cave in the
Breidamerkurjökull glacier. A portion of the glacier collapsed, leading to the
disaster. One tourist was reported dead, and another was injured, though the
injured tourist is not in critical condition. The search for the two missing
individuals continues.
According to local media, a rescue operation involving
at least 200 personnel is underway. Commissioner Sveinn Kristjan Runarsson
stated, “The conditions in the area are very challenging. It’s difficult to
bring equipment into the glacier. This is a bad situation. Everything has to be
done manually.” Runarsson also mentioned that there was nothing to suggest that
the tour was dangerous. “Ice cave tours are conducted almost year-round.
Experienced and skilled guides lead these tours. However, luck may not always
be on your side. This is a living environment, so anything can happen,” he
added.
