Leading travel insurance provider Travel Guard examined
two years of Google search data, tracking searches for both luxury and
affordable travel inspiration, to uncover which destinations are seeing the
biggest year-over-year rise in interest among travelers.
Abu Dhabi leads global surge in luxury
travel searches for 2026
Abu Dhabi ranks as the top destination for luxury
vacations, with searches up 421% year-on-year, the biggest increase worldwide.
The capital of the United Arab Emirates draws travelers with cultural icons
like the Louvre Abu Dhabi and the upcoming Guggenheim, plus desert adventures
and headline events throughout the year.
Acapulco, Mexico, follows in second place, with luxury
travel searches up 253% compared to the previous year. A popular spot on the
Mexican Riviera, it’s winning over Americans with its five-star resorts,
nightlife and beaches. Those visiting Mexico City for FIFA World Cup 2026
matches can hop on a quick two-hour flight for a scenic beach escape.
Punta del Este rounds out the top three. Dubbed the
“Monaco of South America,” it pairs white-sand beaches and fine dining with a
relaxed, European-style charm that’s putting it firmly on travelers’ radars.
Crete tops Google searches inspiring visitors’ 2026
budget travel plans
Crete leads the list, with budget-conscious travel
searches up 179% year-on-year. Greece’s largest island offers hidden beaches,
authentic cuisine and Mediterranean charm, all at a fraction of the cost of
Santorini or Mykonos.
Kathmandu ranks second, known as the gateway to
Everest Base Camp and a favorite for adventure seekers on a budget. Street food
stalls, low-cost stays in the Thamel district and world-class trekking routes
make it an unforgettable budget pick.
Known for its underground cities, Cappadocia takes
third place, with budget travel searches rising nearly 170%. Hot-air balloon
rides and “fairy chimney” landscapes dominate social feeds, while a favorable
exchange rate makes Türkiye’s boutique cave hotels and local crafts within easy
reach for U.S. travelers.
